Biography
Sybil Slaten is a culinary historian specializing in the Caribbean region. After college, she migrated from her native Jamaica to Toronto, Canada and became an advocate of the cuisine and culture of the Caribbean. Sybil quickly developed a passion for food and travel and pursued both eagerly, taking many professional culinary courses to sharpen her skills.
Relocation to New Jersey and subsequent worldwide travels have given her the opportunity to taste and compare many of the world’s cuisines. She has visited most of the other Caribbean islands and has done extensive research into the culture, cuisine and development of the region. She has also joined many other aficionados in the area by recently completing an extensive manuscript for a series of books.
Sybil is a graduate of the “Master Class in Cooking” program at the Culinary Center of the New School for Social Research in New York City, where she conducted cooking seminars on the cuisine of the Caribbean. She has been very active, organizing food shows and visiting schools, from kindergartens to universities, giving lectures and cooking demonstrations. She has also made numerous appearances on television and radio shows including UPN 9 with Matt Lauer, WABC-TV, the Lifetime Channel, WOR RADIO’s “Food Talk” with Arthur Schwarts and “Dining Around” with Gene Burns. She has also contributed food articles to various magazines.
Sybil is the creator and host of “CARIBBEAN KITCHEN,” a series of cooking videos. It is her intention that these videos will garner an awareness of the Caribbean’s role in influencing the world’s cuisine.
